The Threading Ritual

You’ve probably threaded dozens of machines. Maybe hundreds.

And yet—somewhere around stitch number 50—you flip the fabric over and see it: a tangled mess of loops on the underside.

We’ve all been there. And nine times out of ten, it’s because of one tiny, almost embarrassing mistake.

Threading with the presser foot down.

Here’s the geometry behind it:

  • Presser foot UP = tension disks are open. Thread slides right in where it belongs. Perfect grip.
  • Presser foot DOWN = disks are closed. Thread sits on top like it’s waiting for a bus. Never gets grabbed properly.

Result? Beautiful fabric on top, bird’s nest on the bottom. Every time.

So yes, it’s geometry. But it’s also just a habit. And habits take practice.

Our cheat: Say it out loud—“Foot up, thread. Foot down, sew.” Like a weird little mantra.

Try it. And if you forget? Welcome to the club. We’ve all been there.
